2 missing foreign trekkers in Ifugao found safe

Banaue, Ifugao – Two Dutch nationals who went missing while trekking in the mountains of Banaue, Ifugao, were found safe by Haggiyo cops.

On Saturday, September 2, Banaue police station received a call from 911 emergency hotline stating that Roy Schouten, 22, and his brother Rich Schouten, 19, both from the Netherlands, called asking for help as they were lost in the mountain ranges between barangays Cambulo and Pula, Banaue.

When the cops coordinated with the local tourism office, they were informed that the names of the Schouten brothers were not in the records.

With the validation conducted by the personnel of Banaue police, along with Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Bureau of Fire Protection and Ifugao 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company, it was known that the Schouten brothers arrived on Thursday in Batad village where they stayed overnight.

On Friday, the two went to Cambulo and stayed in a lodge. They then checked out at around 6:30 a.m. the following day and said that they would head to Barangay Pula and then to Awan Igid viewpoint.

When the brothers reached Sitio Buladna, Cambulo, one of the residents offered to guide them towards the proper route but they refused and insisted on taking the other route heading to Barlig, Mt. Province.

Authorities from various agencies, with the help of volunteers, launched search and rescue operations. It was around 1:28 in the afternoon that the two were found safe at Sitio Lamagan, Cambulo, Banaue.

The Schouten brothers sustained minor injuries along their way and were provided first aid by the rescuers before guiding them back to the town proper for subsequent intervention.
