Just this August 2024, the World Health Organization declared mpox outbreak a public health emergency. Moreover, as of Monday, September 9, the Philippines has 14 active mpox cases.

One of these active cases has been detected in region 2, the Department of Health Cagayan Valley announced on Tuesday, September 10.

“The patient, whose identity will remain confidential to protect privacy, has been isolated and is currently receiving the necessary medical care,” the agency wrote.

DOH Cagayan Valley is now tracing people who have been in contact with the confirmed case. These close contacts will be monitored for symptoms and shall be provided with guidance.

With the case, the DOH region 2 is calling on the public to remain calm but vigilant.

Regional Director Dr. Amelita Pangilinan emphasized the importance of following health protocols such as regular hand washing, wearing of face masks in crowded places, and seeking medical assistance should someone develop symptoms of mpox.

"We are working closely with healthcare providers and local government units to contain the virus and protect the public's health," Pangilinan was quoted saying.
