Mother and daughter died of carbon monoxide poisoning in Benguet

Updated: Sep 15, 2023

Benguet, Philippines – Exposure to carbon monoxide, a gas produced by burning any type of fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood, or charcoal may lead to brain damage, breathing difficulties and even death, like that of the mother and daughter in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Before the incident, the neighbors of the victims residing in Shamolog, Pico, La Trinidad saw Melly Mao Balanban, 45, holding a bolo on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023, reported Mt. Province Broadcasting Corporation – MPBC.

Nymwel Delfin Balantin, the live-in partner of Balanban, went to Buguias that day and when he returned home in the evening, he saw the padlock and key hanging outside. Their door was then locked and all the windows were closed and locked from the inside.

Balantin knocked at the door many times but no one responded. He then asked his neighbors to help him open the door forcibly. There, he saw Balanban and their 9-year-old daughter lying in bed but were no longer breathing.

Responding personnel from La Trinidad Municipal Police Station headed by Police Major Leonard Danasen checked and there were no sign of forced entry. No property was stolen.

The policemen, along with the Scene of the Crime Operatives, believe the two could have died of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by the pieces of pine wood or "saleng" and coal found in the house.

Balanban might have used the bolo for cutting the pine wood.

With no sign of foul play, the family of the victim signed an autopsy waiver.
