Cagayan, Philippines – A 90-year-old mother and 60-year-old son died during a residential fire in Barangay Centro Norte in Gattaran on March 20.

The victims were identified as Marcelina Bernardo and her son Roger Bernardo.

Through the Cagayan Provincial Information Office, Lt. Romel Ramos, Gattaran Deputy Chief of Police, said that authorities were able to save the nonagenarian and her son from their burning house.

Roger was then helping in extinguishing the fire. However, Marceline rushed back to the house to retrieve their land title.

Upon knowing that his 90-year-old mother went back to the burning house, Roger followed her.

Unfortunately, neither of the two managed to get out of the house as the fire reached a second alarm that the BFP Gattaran needed the help of the firetrucks from BFP Lallo, Lasam, and Camalaniugan to subdue the fire.

In an investigation made by the authorities, the fire started from a candle that Marcelina forgot to put out after her rosary prayer.

Meantime, a house owned by a retired teacher was also affected by the fire. Said incident reached an estimated amount of P3 million in damages.
