Security Guard held hostage mother and child in Baguio City

Baguio City, Philippines - The police force of Baguio City under the leadership of Acting Director PCol. Francisco Bulwayan, along with Mayor Benjamin Magalong, saved a mother and her 4-year-old daughter who were taken hostage by a distressed security guard on Saturday, November 26, 2022.

The hostage-taking happened from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. of said day in the victim’s rented apartment at Sunflower Street, Quezon Hill Proper, Baguio City. The elder victim was said to be the sister of the hostage-taker’s live-in partner.

In a press release, the police stated they were informed by the house owner that the 40-year-old guard with a gun in possession locked the room and chained one of the victims over a personal misunderstanding.

A related report by PTV-Cordillera said the security guard made the move to make his partner, who was in Leyte at that time, go back.

Equipped with training he gained at the Federal Bureau of Investigation Academy as a hostage negotiator, Magalong supervised the tense negotiation that lasted for six hours.

While the distressed man was occupied with the negotiation, the police rescued the victims through the bedroom window. The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team entered the window and rescued the victims at the same time, subdued the suspect.

Police confiscated an Armscor 9mm pistol with a magazine containing seven rounds of ammunition.

Magalong stressed patience is necessary for dealing with such a situation, and that there is no need for a bloody operation.

The guard is under the custody of BCPO - Naguilian Police Station 1. Police, accordingly, will file a case for Serious Illegal Detention, Violation of 7610, and Illegal Possession of Firearms and Ammunitions against him.
