Mr. and Ms. Bikers Champ of Apayao hailed

Updated: May 7, 2023

Apayao, Philippines – Provincial Health Office of Apayao on Friday, April 21, declared the winners of this year’s search for Mr. and Ms. Bikers Champ.

In line with the “Padyak para sa Healthy Pilipinas” campaign of the Department of Health, the event was initiated to promote road safety and a healthy lifestyle while encouraging physical activity.

"We hope that by holding events like this, we can promote safe driving habits among the biking community. Bikers are more vulnerable on the road, and we want to make sure that they understand the importance of following traffic rules and regulations," said Health Promotion Officer Corazon Juan through the Provincial Information Office.

A day before the bike race, the cyclists were first briefed on road safety and responsible driving through an education and information campaign at Aliwa Gymnasium, San Isidro Sur, Luna. PHO, in partnership with Highway Patrol Group (HPG) in the province including other experts, were then invited for the lecture and presentation.

On Friday, around 20 bikers started from the Apayao welcome arch within the boundary of Apayao and Cagayan to the Apayao Eco-tourism grandstand and Sports Complex in Luna.

During the awarding ceremony, Kyla Nicole Bayani and Ian Cariaga, both from Luna, were hailed as Ms. and Mr. Biker Champ 2023, respectively.

"It is a great honor for us, but what's more important is the message we want to impart to fellow bikers. We must always prioritize our safety while on the road. This kind of activity is a good example to encourage the youth to be a part of the growing cycling community in the province," Cariaga said in his interview with the information office.

In the senior category, 53-year-old Montano Armas of Sta. Marcela emerged as the winner, beating Mario Ominga and Erwin Ballesteros from Pudtol and Luna, respectively.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Mark Calban commended participating cyclists for their commitment to raising road safety awareness and encouraged others to do the same.

The PHO, in collaboration with HPG and the Land Transportation Office, aims to stage more events in the future for a safer road environment among the cycling community.
