Mountain Province, Philippines – The production of red tilapia in Mountain Province is expected to see increase in numbers with the implementation of the project “Red Tilapia in Ponds and Cages in the Cordillera Administrative Region”.

The fish ponds and cages are located in the municipalities of Sagada and Tadian. The operations will be managed by the Mountain Province Farmers, Fisherfolk and Loah Throng (MPFFLT).

The said project, according to Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Cordillera (BFAR-CAR) Officer-in-Charge Lois June Fermin, is part of the research program conducted by the Department of Agriculture to study red tilapia production.

Why red tilapia production

During the project’s performance evaluation and Harvest Field held on July 13, 2022, DA - Bureau of Agriculture Research (DA-BAR) - Assistant Division Head Julia Lapitan said that apart from being a source of income, the red tilapia production aims to help address the country’s problem on food shortage.

Red tilapia is a high value food fish that can be raised in ponds and cages and is in high demand in restaurants due to its color and taste.

With the thought of expanding the said project in the province, Lapitan expressed her gratitude to the beneficiaries of red tilapia production.

“I am very overwhelmed with the interest of the beneficiaries in culturing red tilapia. I can see that BFAR has molded you all in fisheries. As I see, you have a strong organization and with your efforts and determination you can do more in the future,” said the DA-BAR Assistant Division Head.

“The bureau has nurtured my knowledge and skills in aquaculture fisheries that help my family in our daily living expense. My income from fisheries helps me in acquiring 3,200 square meter lot. I am thankful to this project and to the bureau for their efforts. With the help of our organization made it easier and possible for me and will be expanding another intervention in fisheries,” expressed Modelio Gapacan, one of the beneficiaries of the said program.

Aside from red tilapia project, MPFFLT President Rex Cadio revealed that the organization received P5.5 million fund from DA Secretary William Dar.
