Mt. Province farmer is top 5 in National Search for Outstanding Rural Women 2022

Barlig, Mt. Province – Jolenda Lomas-e from Barangay Kaleo, Barlig, Mountain Province secured the fifth spot in the National Search for Outstanding Rural Women (SORW) during the awarding on Thursday, December 8, 2022.


Chosen as the top 5, Lomas-e received from the award-giving body a P 30,000 cash incentive and a plaque.

SORW or known as Gawad Parangal sa Katangi-tanging Kababaihan sa Pagsasaka a Kanayunan is an annual search conducted by the Department of Agriculture- Gender and Development Focal Point System (DA GFPS) and is aimed at highlighting and recognizing the important role of women showing exemplary contribution in the development of agriculture and fisheries sector.


In a statement, the outstanding woman expressed gratefulness to the DA-CAR family and to Barlig’s local government unit who extended their support during the competition and assisted her with her agricultural venture.


“Agyamanak iti na-receive ko nga award ken maragsakanak ta nasabat ko dagiti kakadwa nga national nominees. Saan nga mailadawan ti ragsak ko ta uray nu farmer kami ket inawardan ken pinadayawan dakami kas women leaders,” Lomas-e added.


To be a good example in the community, Lomas-e encouraged her fellow women farmers to do more including the work done by men.


She added that they should give importance to farming vegetables and root crops and find ways to become agri-entrepreneurs.


Evaluation of nominees


Lomas-e and other national nominees were evaluated based on three major criteria.


These include their contribution to food security/ agricultural and fishery development such as productivity, the profitability of economic activities, and quality of products/services which is 30 %, and their contribution to sustainable development like the efforts to protect the environment, efforts to adapt to climate change/emerging conditions, and innovativeness/creativity with 30 %.


Likewise, also considered in the judging of winners is how the nominee impacted rural women such as promotion of women empowerment and gender equality, improvement of family life, excellence in character/ability to hurdle difficulties, and contribution to local economy which is 40 %.
