Mt. Pulag trekkers told to use ‘thicker body warmers’ as defense against hypothermia

Kabayan, Benguet – “The temperature in Mt. Pulag is quite cold this January to February. Those planning to camp at the campsites are advised to bring thicker body warmers to avoid hypothermia,” said the management of Mt. Pulag as the temperature drops in the country’s third highest peak.

The advisory was made by the management after observing some of the tourists visiting the area for trekking are backing out due to what seemed to be unbearable weather.

Staying in homestays is likewise recommended by the management to beat the cold nights and inclement weather as they try to conquer Luzon’s highest peak.

On Tuesday morning, January 24, the temperature in the area ranged from 6°C and 7°C due to the Northeast monsoon, with some portion of the mountain’s trail covered with frost or ‘andap’ in the local term.

With this, the park management further suggested that when climbing the summit, trekkers need to bring with them ‘lip balm, a thermos, a kettle, and more tea bags, coffee, or other soup packs as most trekkers are compelled to drink hot water more than usual due to the freezing weather.’

“Weekday trekking is highly advisable as there are fewer trekkers and less traffic and queueing in the visitors' center. Saturdays are always full with full parking areas, queueing is common in the comfort rooms and conference room,” they added.

In some areas in Benguet, frost is likewise being experienced, affecting the agricultural produce of farmers.

Pj Haight in a Facebook post shared this morning some snaps of the ground frost in Englandad, Paoay, Atok, Benguet.

In his interview with local media, Haight said vegetables covered with frost might be a stunning view for others but to them, this means they will have lower income.

He cited the cabbage as an example saying that if it survived the frost, it will only be sold as a ‘second class’ which amounts to P20 per kilo. At first class, cabbages can be sold at P30 per kilo.
