Muay Thai athletes from Tanudan, Kalinga prepare for National Championships

Tanudan, Kalinga – Nearly five months since combative sports were introduced to the youth in Tanudan, Kalinga, chosen athletes are gearing for the 4th Muay Thai National Championships this coming November 29 – December 3, 2022 in Olongapo City.

This Muay Thai National championship is held to discover young athletes who can join the Muay Thai National Team – Bagsik and represent the Philippines in world championships.

This would be the first national tournament to be attended by the athletes from Tanudan after combative sports was intiated by Mayor Jaedicke Rhoss Dagadag.

The introduction of the said sports is the LGU’s way of instilling discipline to the youth and training more yKalinga martial artists to represent the province and Tanudan in national and international competitions.

To make this happen, Tanudan Martial Arts Instructor and Coach Daniel Gumilao went around different barangays in town to train elementary and high school students in various disciplines like arnis, boxing, Pencak silat, wushu, and wrestling since June.

Almost five months later, 20 athletes from the municipality were chosen for the Muaythai national tournament on November 29 – December 3 at Subic Bay Gymnasium.

Gumilao said that the athletes train in Tabuk City where the facilities are. Part of the training is improving the athletes’ stamina through jogging and enhancing their strength.

“Dagiti athletes ket kailangan training, tapnu ma-addaan da ti stamina jogging da agsapa, malem punch met, bagging ken sparring,” he said.

Gumilao expressed that their first exposure in the national arena is a huge step to mold and strengthen further the combative sports in Tanudan.
