Updated: Oct 14, 2022

Tinglayan, Kalinga – Apo Whang-od has been chosen as this year’s top centenarian awardee for her outstanding contribution to national culture and the arts by the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC).

With said recognition, the country’s oldest ‘mambabatok’ was personally visited by the Personnel of the NCSC and staff of the Department of Social Welfare and Development last Thursday, October 6, 2022, and awarded the tattoo artist a P10,000 cash incentive and a plaque of recognition.

As relayed by the elderly commission, they first paid a courtesy call to Tinglayan Mayor Sacrament Gumilab before proceeding to Buscalan for the awarding.

Getting the award, Apo Whang-od, in an interview wished the National Commission of Senior Citizens officials and workers all the best in the future while expressing hope that they will execute their jobs effectively and keep the elderly comfortable and safe.

When asked by the NCSC for her advice to her fellow elderly, she said they should not engage themselves in ‘vices like smoking and drinking in order to live a longer and healthier life.’

She later shared some tips on how to live longer, one of which is eating healthy food, such as organic vegetables and food that has no preservatives.

As recalled, the Philippines’ oldest hand-tapped tattoo artist is also among the 14 awardees this year for the first Hiyas Award for Indigenous Art.

The Hiyas Award, according to the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), is given to ‘exceptional individuals and organizations who have contributed immensely to the flourishing of arts and culture’. It gives recognition to deserving individuals and/or organizations in Luzon who have exemplified commendable work and services in cultural and artistic endeavors.
