“No more reported deaths of cows, carabaos in Ballayangon” – OMAg Pinukpuk

Updated: Nov 28, 2023

Pinukpuk, Kalinga – There are no longer reports on the deaths of cattle and carabaos in Ballayangon, Pinukpuk, as of date.

This was relayed by the Office of Municipal Agriculture-Pinukpuk on Monday, November 27.

Anthrax outbreak was declared in the province following the clustering of cases in the aforementioned barangay.

Last month, a native carabao was slaughtered in the area eight hours after it died.

Forty-two people were reported to have been in contact with the carabao meat, and five were said to have developed skin lesions and had fever, headaches, and body aches.

Samples of vesicular fluid swabs from cutaneous lesions were taken from the five individuals, and one was confirmed to be positive for the bacteria. Those infected already underwent anti-bacterial treatment and have already recovered, as of this writing.

As to the soil samples collected from where the animal grazes, the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera said the results are not recommended for reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).

On November 15–16, Glyceryl Hortelano of OMAG Pinukpuk said they conducted vaccinations against Anthrax on 64 heads of carabaos and cattle in the area.

Fifty-two of these were dewormed, while 69 others were injected with vitamins.

“As far as the animal side is concerned, we already conducted anthrax vaccinations on large animals in the area on November 15 and 16. Kadwa ni MLGU ti Provincial Veterinary Office,” Hortelano conveyed.
