NPA couple who fled from Samar cornered in Baguio City

Baguio City, Philippines – A couple suspected to be behind the destruction of government properties and other harassment activities in Northern and Eastern Samar were cornered in Baguio City earlier this week.

The accused were identified as 47-year-old ‘Anjo’ or ‘Islaw’ and 42-year-old ‘Anya’ or ‘Ninya’. Both are from San Jose, Tacloban City and were tagged as members of the Sub-Regional Committee of EMPORIUM in Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (SRC EMPORIUM, EVRPC) which is operating in Eastern Visayas.

They entered the group in 2018, and in their four years of stay in the organization, Anjo became the Secretary while Anya was the Educational and Finance Officer.

Anjo and Anya were arrested by the Baguio City Police Office on July 8 through their standing warrants of arrest for violation of Republic Act 11479 or ‘The Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020’ and for Arson.

Their cases, as mentioned by the Baguio City Public Information Office, stemmed from the allegations the two were behind the destruction of government properties in Northern and Eastern Samar. Likewise, Anjo was allegedly involved in the ‘notorious harassment’ activities in the said places.

From hiding in Angeles, Pampanga, the couple went to Baguio City and has been staying there – moving from one barangay to another – for the last four months before their arrest.

The two are expected to be transferred to the courts in Eastern Visayas.
