Old pastor tagged as Cordillera's 'top most wanted' nabbed after 8 years in hiding


Abra, Philippines – After nearly nine years since he was charged with murder in Benguet, a senior citizen pastor from Abra was finally brought to police custody to answer the case filed against him.


Police authorities arrested the 60-year-old suspect, Melchor Langbayan Balance, in Luba, Abra on January 18, 2023, a report from national media stated.

Balance, also known as ‘Commander Kawar’, was a former commander of the Cordillera People’s Liberation Army.


He was charged before the Regional Trial Court in La Trinidad, Benguet for murder. His arrest warrant was issued by Judge Jennifer Humiding on March 20, 2014.


The suspect was listed as the number 2 Regional Top Most Wanted Person in the Cordillera. He was the top most wanted in 2019.


Almost nine years since his warrant of arrest was issued, he was tracked and cornered by the Benguet operatives upon verification of information on his whereabouts.


No bail was recommended for the suspects’ temporary freedom.
