Tabuk City, Kalinga – Presiding the House Committee on Indigenous Cultural Communities and Indigenous Peoples Organizational Meeting on August 25, Kalinga Representative Allen Jesse Mangaoang reminded the committee members of their mandate that these will remain the same under the new administration.

The congressman reiterated that the committee should uphold its objective to recognize, respect, protect and promote indigenous communities and indigenous peoples and their rights enshrined in the constitution.

Likewise, the members, he said, should safeguard the rights of IPs to ancestral lands and domains and prevent defilement to their sacred spaces.

“We are still here to advance their right to self-governance and empower them to proudly forge their own destinies true to their interest and the welfare of communities and integrity of their cultures,” added the congressman.

Mangaoang said the committee should further help the IPs achieve social justice and to protect their human rights, pursue dialogs and conversations with affected sectors and constituencies, give them sufficient opportunities to be heard and to present their side without prejudice and persecution.

“As survivors of the biggest pandemic in modern history we have come to regard life with a newfound respect and we as legislators, and especially as members of the IP communities ourselves, should extend this respectful life to our IP brethren who cannot fight for themselves,” underscored Mangaoang.

The Chairperson then encouraged the committee members “enter the 19th congress with impassioned hearts and to lead deep and impactful legislations for our indigenous cultural communities and our indigenous people.”
