Over 50% of Baguio inmates detained due to drug violations

Baguio City, Philippines – More than half of the persons deprived of liberty in Baguio City Jail were said to have been put behind bars due to drug violations.


In a data reported by the Baguio City Public Information Office, there is a total of 518 PDLs currently occupying the male and female dorms at Baguio City Jail. 307 of them are there due to violations of the Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the police in the regular search for contrabands inside the jail cells nevertheless said they have not discovered presence of illegal drugs in the cells of inmates so far.


Additionally, results of the random drug testing done to the inmates recently are negative.


Cases committed by males


The top 5 crimes violated by male inmates were RA 9165 (255 violators); rape (45); murder (29); homicide (12); acts of lasciviousness in relation to RA 7610 (11); and robbery (11).


As of June 24, there are 422 PDLs occupying the Baguio City Jail - Male Dorm.

Cases committed by females


The top crime committed by female inmates likewise point to drug violations with 52 violators, 35 for estafa and illegal recruitment, 3 for qualified trafficking in persons, 2 for murder, and 1 case for homicide, qualified theft, violation of RA 7610, and perjury or falsification.


There are 96 PDLs detained at the Baguio City Jail – Female Dorm.
