Over P3M in grants allotted for Young Farmers Challenge Program; 39 slots available

Baguio City, Philippines – The Cordillera Region, one of the big winners of the 2023 National Young Farmer’s Challenge, has been given 39 slots this year for the Young Farmers Challenge Program.


The program is a competition for young farmers who want to venture into profitable agri-fishery enterprises and strengthen their agri-entrepreneurship capabilities.


The Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (AMAD) of the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera said that each of the six provinces in Cordillera will be given 6 slots while Baguio City will have 3 slots.


In case there are provinces with fewer participants than their intended slots, some of those will be given to others having more entries to the contest.


If able to present an excellent business canvas, a contestant will be granted a capital of P80,000 at the provincial level.


Seven entries will be chosen for the regional competition of the open category subcomponent, and those selected will be given P150,000 each.


Other categories of the competition

In said competition, there is also a subcomponent called the intercollegiate category. The intercollegiate category is open for a team of college students in state universities.


Winners are assured of P150,000 prize money at the regional level.


As for the Upscale category, this is dedicated to youth who previously joined the competition but wish to enhance their started enterprise. Three will be chosen at the regional level and will be given a P300,000 financial grant.


From these regional qualifiers, three will be trying their luck at the national level for the start-up category. If able to win, P300,000 each will be given to them.


The Upscale category, meantime, will only send one entry who could win a P500,000 financial grant.


This particular, category to recall, has been won by Shawnie Dhale Bitso of Tuba, Benguet, the owner of Sanagi Agri-Tourism Farm for the competition’s edition last year.


In relation to this, the pre-registration for the start-up category of the competition was opened last month by DA-AMAD. This is until July 21.


It is open to young people, either individual or group.


Applicant should be 18-30 years old, a natural-born Filipino citizen, and has the resources, network, or capability to venture into agriculture and fishery business enterprise within the region.


For groups, members should qualify in the aforementioned criteria and should not be related up to the second civil degree of consanguinity or affinity.
