P.3M aid in vegetables seeds to be distributed to Banaue flood-affected farmers this week

Banaue, Ifugao – After the flashflood that damages much of the crops and farms in Banaue, famers heavily impacted by the disaster will be getting this week from the Department of Agriculture – Cordillera assorted vegetable seedlings.

The assorted vegetable seeds, according to the agency, amounts to P340, 860, and is a means to aid the farmers in starting with their cultivation.


In charge of distribution are the Ifugao’s Provincial Emergency Operation Center (EOC) and Task Force which include the Agricultural Program Coordinating Officer (APCO), DA-CAR Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) staff, and the local government unit involved.


DA-CAR said the seed distribution is a partial assistance which could immediately help the farmers while field validation and assessment of affected farms is still underway.


As recalled, flash floods and mudslides ravaged the municipality after hours of heavy rains occurred on July 7.


Banaue reported at least P16.6 million agricultural damage and losses affecting 768 farmers.

According to the agency, about 120 hectares of rice fields (239 MT), three hectares of corn areas, and 78 hectares of high-value crops (489 MT) were damaged in the disaster.


Meantime, about 82 heads of swine, six rabbits, and 1,330 poultry perished from the mudslide.


With the losses, DA-CAR said they will formulate a rehabilitation plan based on the result of the field validation and assessment to extend more help to farmers affected.


DA-CAR Regional Executive Director Cameron Odsey nevertheless told public that even with said calamity, vegetable production remains stable in the area.
