P.4M worth of crops in Kibungan, Benguet damaged by frost


Benguet, Philippines – Plummeting temperatures brought about by the Northeast Monsoon led to frost or ice crystal formation that has so far damaged P415,000 worth of crops in Kibungan, Benguet.


According to farmers, they have been experiencing frost in the locality since January this year.


As of today, March 10, around 1.7-hectare plantation has been damaged, based on the damage reports submitted by the nine farmers from Madaymen, Kibungan. Most of the damaged crops are those in swampy area.

Farmers are now considering to change their crops, in case those affected will no longer survive.


The high-elevation areas of Benguet and even Mt. Province have been experiencing frost over the years, especially when temperatures drop to a single digit so vegetable farmers have learned to adapt to such phenomenon.


The frost phenomenon happens in high-elevation areas in the provinces of Benguet and Mountain Province and is experienced yearly when the temperature in this mountain region drops to a single digit.


On March 07, temperature in Atok, Benguet went down to 2° Celsius.
