P1.9M rescue vehicle ready to serve yTinglayans in need

Updated: Aug 5, 2023

Tinglayan, Kalinga - To intensify its preparedness to respond to disasters and calamities, the local government unit of Tinglayan purchased a rescue vehicle which was turned over and blessed on Wednesday, August 2.

The newly-purchased vehicle, a P1.9 million Toyota Hilux, was bought through the 5 percent Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund of Tinglayan for 2023 and was handed over to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).

Larae Lactao said the vehicle ‘will serve as additional transport for rescue, medical and non-medical purposes in the municipality.’

Considering that the barangays in the municipality are geographically isolated, the vehicle will be used to carry the sick and women giving birth to the nearest healthcare facilities.

It would also be used in responding to disaster-affected individuals.

Rescue vehicle named ‘Tumaku’

Lactao, relayed to the local government, as suggested by Mayor Sacrament Gumilab, named the rescue vehicle ‘Tumaku’.

‘Tumaku’ is a local term in Tinglayan that can be translated as ‘to salvage’ or ‘to save life’.

The mayor's hope that the vehicle would stop deaths and save lives instead inspired how the vehicle was named.

For the vehicle to serve its purpose for a longer period of time, the mayor reminded employees, particularly drivers, of the importance of good stewardship.

He went on to say that government properties should be taken care of because they are ‘owned by the people and meant to serve the people.’

“This government property should be well taken care of. Protect it because this is publicly owned, many people own it, and through this vehicle, we serve the community in times of emergencies,” the young lawyer-politician said.

At present, the local government unit already owns two rescue vehicles.
