Banaue, Ifugao – To assist in the recovery of 756 Banaue farmers whose crops were swept by the July 07 flash flood and mudflow, the Department of Agriculture – Cordillera proposed a P4,419,944.00 rehabilitation plan to its Central Office for budget consideration.

The said flash flood destroyed several homes and crops that affected the livelihood of many families in the area.

In a press release, the regional department informed that the rehabilitation plan shall focus on production support services for procurement of assorted vegetable seeds, livestock, and poultry with supplements, HDPE (high-density polyethylene) hose, and soil ameliorants.

The assistance, it said, was based on the post-damage needs assessment of the Provincial Emergency Operation Center (EOC) and Task Force composed of Agricultural Program Coordinating Officer (APCO), DA-CAR Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DRRM) personnel, and the Local Government Units (LGUs).

In its final crop damage report, the department’s DRRM relayed P10.9 million in total agricultural damage, affecting the rice, high-value crops, and livestock and poultry of the farmers in Barangays Taman, Poblacion, Bocos, Poitan, Amganad, and Viewpoint.

Vegetable production in CAR remains stable despite the adverse impact of the flash flood. Regional Executive Director Cameron P. Odsey assured that ‘the vegetable production in the region remains stable and will not be affected by the recent incident.’

If the regional department’s proposal is granted, the P4.4 million assistance shall add up to the P340,860 worth of assorted vegetables earlier distributed by the same office to the flood-affected farmers.
