P8.18M cash aid granted to 1,637 rice farmers in Aguinaldo, Ifugao

Aguinaldo, Ifugao – A total of 1,637 eligible rice farmers in Aguinaldo, Ifugao received P8,185,000 cash grant during the distribution of Rice Farmers' Financial Assistance held at the Municipal Gymnasium in Barangay Galonogon on November 14 and 15, 2022.

Said amount came from the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund - Rice Farmers Financial Assistance (RCEF-RFFA) program of the Department of Agriculture, in partnership with the municipal local government unit led by Mayor Gaspar Chilagan Jr.

The financial aid provides compensation for the projected income loss of rice farmers due to the drop in palay prices, says the agency.

Specifically, the program gives P5,000 each to smallholder rice farmers whose farm sizes range from 0.5 but not exceeding two hectares.

These, the department added, must be registered in the updated Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) as per approved registration and updating protocol.

The program sources its fund from the collected tariff in the implementation of Republic Act 11203 known as "Rice Tariffication Law" which aims to protect local farmers from the entry of more imported rice into the country through the imposition of a 35% tariff on rice coming from member-countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

For non-ASEAN countries, a 40% tariff is imposed. The collected tariffs will be used to fund mass irrigation, warehousing, and rice research.
