Tabuk City, Kalinga – Being the primary supplier of pottery products in the province, the Municipalities of Balbalan and Pasil became the recipient of free training given by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Cordillera through Provincial Science and Technology Office- Kalinga.

The pottery makers from Dalupa and Talalang shall be exposed to innovative means in improving their production process and product designs in order to come up with better products, particularly ceramics.

The trainings were consecutively done from December 11-13, according to PSTO- Kalinga OIC-Director Dexy Catacutan.

Serving as their resource speaker are experts from the Tahanan Pottery Shop - Vicente Gudiño and Thomas Feyrer.

On said training, the potters were given lecture on the new trends in the pottery industry and marketability of their locally-made products.

The Electronic Potter’s Wheel

In the demo and workshop, an Electronic Potter’s Wheel (EPW), a product developed by DOST was utilized.

This, according to Catacutan, was made to teach the potters on the proper usage of the equipment as same equipment will be handed over to Dalupa Potters Association as part of the PSTO-Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) project.

For Talalang, Catacutan said the provision of same equipment will be funded by the Balbalan LGU with technical assistance from the Department of Trade and Industry.

Said equipment is an excellent tool in improving the quality of the organization's ceramic products.

“With the goal to reduce the lead time and increase the quality of ceramic products, this simple, easy to operate and maintain, and gender-responsive equipment, is an upgrade of the manual pottery wheel (non-motorized) which has a heavy fly wheel and requires the potter to exert maximum effort during operation,” PSTO-Kalinga said in a press release.

The equipment, powered by an electric motor, ensures the ceramic products that will be crafted is of better quality since it is equipped with corrosion-free head plate and body parts.

Evaluation of Clay in the area

PSTO-Kalinga, meantime, shared that the clay available in the area was also evaluated. A recommendation was made, in which, to attain high-quality products, pre-treatments of clay should be conducted.

For further analysis on the quality of the clay, samples were obtained by the visitors.
