Pasil strategizes to achieve proposed 10-year Solid Waste Management Plan

Pasil, Kalinga – To ensure the protection of public health and the environment and prepare with the imminent increase of generated solid wastes because of population growth, the municipal government of Pasil initiated the crafting of its 10-year Solid Waste Management Plan.

Said plan was presented before the National Waste Management Commission on April 26, 2022 by Municipal Mayor Alfredo ‘Chao-ig’ Malannag Jr. along with Municipal Planning and Development Officer Vicente Bucalen.

The formulation of SWMP is in accordance with Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management of 2000, setting guidelines on proper SWM among LGUs in the Philippines to protect public health and ensure environmental sustainability and economic efficiency.

Malannag, through his social media page, said they relayed their strategies to reduce or eliminate the adverse impacts of waste materials on human health and the environment.

Maintaining a healthy environment, he added, is to safeguard the health of the next generations.

Among the locality’s approaches include proper segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment, and disposal of solid waste.

Under the Malannag administration, the LGU procured a biodegradable shredder and two garbage collection trucks. The local government also plans to add two more pieces of equipment to address the growing populace.

Pasil is also set to establish and operate Material Recovery or Recycling Facilities (MRF) in every barangay. An MRF is a facility where the wastes collected are further segregated to recycle or resale various components of recyclable waste.

To ensure its functionality in all the communities, the LGU will institutionalize the solid waste management in all barangays and enact ordinances and policies for rewards and incentive system specifically, to recognize the cleanest barangays, among others.

Further, the government will source out funds to augment its limited funds in solid waste management.
