Tabuk City, Kalinga – Pinukpuk municipality has the highest population among the seven municipalities in Kalinga with its 34,275 residents, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) 2020 Census of Population and Housing.

During the Provincial Data Dissemination Forum held on August 25, 2021, PSA- Kalinga reported that the province has a total of 229, 570 population, from which 14.93 percent are residing in Pinukpuk.

Next to Pinukpuk is the municipality of Rizal, having a total of 19,554 residents followed by the municipality of Tinglayan with 13,148 persons. Balbalan on the other hand has 12,914 residents, Pasil has 10,577, Lubuagan has 9,323, and Tanudan, the smallest in terms of population has a total of 8,746 residents.

Tabuk City, on the other hand, has a population of 121,033 which covers 52.72 percent of the province’s total population. However, despite its large population, Pinukpuk ranked fourth in the Annual Population Growth Rate (APGR) having only 1.44 APGR. The municipality of Rizal topped with 2.94 APGR, followed by Pasil with 1.96 APGR, and the city of Tabuk which is 1.91.

Kalinga, as a whole, has had a 1.62 APGR in the last five years.

The World Health Organization describes the annual average rate as the ratio between the annual increase in the population size and the total population for that year, multiplied by 100.

Among the factors that resulted in the increase in growth rate according to Chief Statistical Analyst Maribel Dalayday is the Balik Probinsiya Program. This, she said, impacted the Census results explaining that imposed lockdowns during the surge of the Covid-19, prevented residents to leave the province.

Meanwhile, PSA-Kalinga Supervising Statistician Specialist Randolf Laderas said that the census is vital since it will serve as a database for government executives, decision-makers and planners in crafting policies.

The census he said provides not only the updated population but also the housing data, which are vital in the formulation of social and economic development plans, policies, and programs.

He added that the result will also serve as a basis in the allocation of resources and revenues, creation or conversion of political and administrative units, and redistricting and apportionment of congressional sits.
