Pinukpuk, Kalinga holds Youth Summit for drug-free, crime-free community

Pinukpuk, Kalinga – A three-day leadership summit aimed at molding leadership skills of the youth to serve as catalysts for peaceful development and promotion of a drug and crime-free society was held in Pinukpuk, Kalinga, and was said to be a success, according to government troops.


It could be challenging to hold a youth summit with over a hundred participants coming from various barangays when the threat of Covid-19 is still around.

Said event was held over the weekend at Aciga, Pinukpuk with young people coming from barangays Aciga, Bayao, Pakawit and Wagud.


The summit was initiated by the Kalinga Apayao Youth Organization (KAYO) and was funded by the four participating barangays.


The organization likewise partnered with the 50th Infantry Batallion, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection and other national-line government agencies.


KAYO President Garry Tubban said the activity was organized to contribute in shaping the young people in the area become agents of nation building as they are regarded as “pag-asa ng bayan” or the hope of the nation.


He expressed hope the participants have taken in them the learnings and skills they gained from the event to be advocates of peace having character-based leadership skills.


In a statement, LtCol. Melanio Somera, Commander of 50th Infantry Battalion expressed his felicitation to the youth-participants and commended them for taking action in support to their campaign for a peaceful community.

“You indeed showcased that you are the hope of our nation. Thank you for showing your support and commitment to our campaign in attaining peace and progress in our community,” Somera said.


Highlight of the activity


Team-building exercises and lectures are among the activities in the three-day event.


Participants attended lectures on preventing violence and terrorism, the fight against illegal drugs and its effects, effects of early age pregnancy, anti-illegal logging and environmental protection.


Also discussed to the attendees are the criminality involving youth offenders and youth volunteerism in Disaster Response.


Various activities like guidon making, spiritual strengthening and cultural presentation were also conducted.


Such activities were made not just to unleash the skills and talents of the participating youth but also to strengthen cooperation among them and reinforce the knowledge and trainings administered by their lecturers.
