Pisay-CAR alumnus among winners in World Universities Debating Championship 2023

Baguio City, Philippines – An alumnus of Philippine Science High School System in Cordillera is a member of Team Ateneo A that won in the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) 2023 held in Madrid, Spain from December 27, 2022 to January 3, 2023.


Robert Nelson “Tobi” Leung and his fellow Atenean David Africa bested other teams from the most prestigious and highly ranked universities in the world including Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, National University of Singapore, and London School of Economics.


The two made history as the first team from the Philippines and Southeast Asia to win in the WUDC, the PSHS System said in today’s press release.

Who is Leung?


Leung, according to the institution, graduated with highest general weighted average in the entire PSHS System composed of 16 campuses nationwide, for school year 2020-2021. He bagged Excellence Awards in English, Social Science, and Research. Likewise, he was conferred with PSHS Leadership Award.


In 2020 and 2021, the then Pisay student took the lead in the Philippine Schools Debate Championships, the biggest and longest running high school debate competition in the country. He made PSHS-CAR campus the first school outside Metro Manila to win the national debate championship.


Last year, the achiever was proclaimed the Overall Best Speaker at the World Schools Debate Championships (WSDC). He was the first Filipino awarded with the said distinction that is regarded as the Olympics of high school debaters.


The PSHS and Department of Science and Technology – CAR commended Leung for his ‘superb achievement.’
