Baguio City, Philippines – Members of the Philippine Military Academy’s MAndirigmang may DAngal SImbolo ng Galing at PagbangON (MADASIGON) Class of 2023 remember their comrade who died of hazing.

Fatal hazing of 4th class cadet Darwin Dormitorio

On September 17, 2019, the then 20-year-old plebe Darwin Dormitorio was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection at the PMA hospital. After the four-hour observation, he was discharged but just a few hours later he started vomiting at their barracks.

Early morning the following day, he was found unconscious in his room. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. He was the first casualty of hazing after the signing of a tougher anti-hazing law in 2018.

Cadets Third Class Felix Lumbag Jr. and Shalimar Imperial Jr. were charged with hazing and murder, while Julius Carlo Tadena was charged with hazing and less serious physical injuries in July 2020.

Also charged with murder and negligence were Capt. Flor Apple Apostol, Maj. Ofelia Beloy, and Lt. Colonel Ceasar Candelaria from the PMA Station Hospital. Top PMA officials were further implicated for “command responsibility.”

Dormitorio to be honored by comrades

Recognizing that Dormitorio continues to be part of their class, the 311 graduating cadets of MADASIGON Class will be sending a bull ring (class ring), class saber, and other mementos to the family of their late “mistah,” the Inquirer reported.

Cadet First Class Edmundo Logronio who is also named as the second-highest ranking cadet said that like them, Dormitorio is also entitled to the class memorabilia. Their class president, he added, has been communicating with the late cadet’s family in Cagayan de Oro.

The members of the class are set to have their graduation rites on Sunday, May 21, that is expected to be graced by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
