‘Protect the people first, elections later’- MAMBA

Updated: May 12, 2021

Cagayan, Philippines― Governor Manuel Mamba of Cagayan argued that it is better for the National Government and Congress to disburse the funds for holding an election in the country for first ensuring the protection of people against CoViD-19.

The pronouncement of Mamba was delivered at the flag raising ceremony held on Monday, May 10 at the Provincial Capitol.

In the report of Cagayan Provincial Information Office, the Governor called on the National Government and Congress to postpone the 2022 National and Local Elections until the majority of the population is vaccinated against the CoViD-19 virus.

He emphasized that unity of the people is greatly needed in this time of crisis and politics should be put aside considering the election would possibly divide the people.

“Let us not divide our people and let us not politicize our war against Covid-19!,” he said.

Putting people at risk during the election period

In addition, he said, the people will be put at risk especially in the course of the election process which will inevitably involve house-to-house rallies, political rallies or any form of campaigning.

Mamba relates that it is only right to postpone the election because the country may not be able to cope like India and America where CoViD-19 cases have worsened due to politics and elections.

“It is not self-serving. For me, even every election I am ready for but instead of fighting, we will work together to alleviate the effects of the pandemic,” he said.

As the upcoming election is on May 09, 2022, its postponement may be made between the formation of the House and Senate as a Constituent Assembly to decide on the matter.
