PSHS-CAR Grade 10 students get World Innovative Science Project Olympiad silver award

Baguio City, Philippines – The year 2023 ended well for high school researchers from the Philippine Science High School Cordillera campus after bringing honor to the country through their brilliance and innovativeness.

Eliz Jae F. Gasatan and Han Na D. Park, both grade 10 students, won the silver award in the World Innovative Science Project Olympiad(WISPO) 2023 in Bandung, Indonesia in December.

WISPO is a scientific project contest that convenes brilliant minds for a competition on innovative Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math issues.

Gasatan and Park were sent to the competition last month after winning in the 2023 International Science Technology and Engineering Competition (ISTEC) held in May.

The two young researchers brought with them to the WISPO 2023 their research entitled, ‘Dye-Sensitized Solar Panel Cell: Harnessing Sunlight Rays as Solar Energy Based on Biodegradable Media.’

The study highlighted the use of leaf pigments from Philippine oregano, Benguet sunflower, and ‘Bangbangsit’ as dye-sensitizers.

Said research earned Gasatan and Park the silver award in the 3-day WISPO on December 14 – 17, 2023.

“Together with the research coach Ms. Frances Marie Alinio-Aniceto, the group not only showcased their scientific prowess but also demonstrated the potential of their innovative project,” the Philippine Science High School Cordillera wrote.
