‘Report those who fire guns during these holidays; we pick them up’ - Kalinga police

Tabuk City, Kalinga – “The same force going up … coming down, it will cause injury to anybody ta jay force na nga agsubli almost the same ijay sinmang at,” said Kalinga Police Provincial Director PCol. Davy Vicente Limmong, explaining the danger of indiscriminate firing.

In the Philippines, people observe the holidays through the production of sounds and noises using firecrackers and other related products. However, apart from firecrackers, some take the chance to fire their guns even if they know it is prohibited.

Indiscriminate firing have been implicated in gun-related injuries during the Yuletide celebration. These cases are mostly in crowded cities but not limited to such, like Metro Manila.

In fact, there were 21 people arrested in the country from December 16, 2019 – January 1, 2020 for indiscriminate firing. Moreover, there were 3 incidents of ‘ligaw na bala’ that penetrated roofs of households. Fortunately, in these cases nobody was harmed.

According to Limmong, indiscriminate firing is really dangerous as the force of the bullet when discharged upwards is almost the same when it comes down. That is why it could penetrate the roof or even the ceiling of a house.

The police have been warning the public that whoever discharges their firearms without any lawful authority and purpose, especially these holidays, will be arrested.

“We warn them for if in case they will use [their] firearms during the celebration of this New Year or Christmas, they will be apprehended,” he said.

Limmong called for cooperation among the people for a peaceful celebration and that for them to immediately report to the police in case somebody will use their firearms.

“Report to us [incidents] para maala da [suspects] nga dagus,” he said.

President Rodrigo Durterte in his public address this December 7 also discourages the firing of guns saying, “basta sunod na may nagpaputukan ng baril… ewan ko kung anong gawin ko, mag-iisip pa ako ng mabuti pero basta… I will make it very serious… I’ll go to congress.”
