Rock-fall in Benguet leaves one dead, three injured

Benguet, Philippines – A man was killed while three others were slightly injured after a boulder suddenly fell, hitting a vehicle along Halsema Highway, Kilometer 53, Barangay Cattubo, Atok, Benguet on Monday afternoon, July 04, 2022.

The casualty identified by Atok Municipal Police Station is Richardick Amoy Cayacay, 52, a resident of Poblacion, Tadian, Mt. Province.

Those injured were Manuel Lictao Ubongen Jr., 54, driver; Susan Cayacay Ubongen, 59; and a 15-year-old student. All injured are residents of Camp 8, Kennon Road, Baguio City.

Initial investigation of the police revealed that the victims on board a Tamaraw FX came from Mt. Province and were bound to La Trinidad, Benguet when a large chunk of rock fell on their vehicle, causing the death of the passenger.

The victims were rushed to Atok District Hospital. Cayacay, however, was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Ubongen, meanwhile, sustained a head injury.

Authorities are conducting further investigation to determine the total damage of the incident.

This is yet the first reported rock fall incident that has so far killed a man this year.
