Santa Marcela Taekwondo team finishes second runner up, wins 9 medals in regional competition

Santa Marcela, Apayao - Apayao Eagles Taekwondo Club (AETC) was hailed as the overall second runner up after bagging a total of 9 medals for the junior division in the Taekwondo Championship held at Easter College Gym in Baguio City on March 9, 2024.

The event was a component of the Panagbengga Flower Festival which highlights the prowess and agility of athletes both in Poomsae (a series of attack and defense forms, which are used heavily in Taekwondo rank testing and a skilled instructor can discern the knowledge, skill level, strength, and focus of a student) and Kyorugi (known as sparring), a free-form fight between two people subject to strict rules to avoid injuries and to ensure a fair competition.

Nicka Agustin won a gold medal in Poomsae and bronze in sparring; Charles Hanz Miranda earned silver in Sparring; Margarette Diwa and Angel Tattao both claimed silver in Poomsae and Bronze in Sparring respectively; while Rouzel Tizzhia Miranda won bronze in both Poomsae and Sparring.

This outstanding performance of the AETC demonstrates their potential in the field of athletic competitions, hence contributive to bringing honor to the municipality. Thrilled by what these athletes had showcased, their couches Ruth P. Viernes and Mary Grace A. Bitun envisioned the team having a national spot next.

Mayor Evelyn Martinez, together with the Sangguniang Bayan, led by Vice Mayor Rolly U. Guiang, lauded the players' excellent achievements and assured them that the LGU will sustain support for their next athletic endeavours.
