Itogon, Benguet – Search and retrieval operation is still ongoing for a husband and wife believed to have been buried in a landslide at around 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, August 17, along the Antamok River in Barangay Loacan.

Rescuers are now utilizing a backhoe for faster retrieval operation.

The victims, who were miners, were identified as Nestor Talangcag, 54, and Maureen Talangcag, 57, from Beda, Loacan, Itogon, Benguet.

Police reports stated that the victims were panning for gold when the landslide occurred resulting to said incident, however, relatives of the victims via Bombo Radyo Baguio later clarified that the couple were walking along the river during that time.

They narrated that they tried calling the attention of the couple to warn them of a landslide taking place, but the two could not hear their shouts with the noise coming from the river.

In an earlier report by the media outlet, they said that the two children of the victims were saved from the incident after they managed to outrun the landslide.

As recalled, the province of Benguet experienced weeks of continuous heavy rains, which may have prompted the saturation of the soil that caused the landslide.
