Senior citizen couple running an ‘investment scam’ captured in Isabela

Isabela, Philippines − A senior citizen couple who are said to be supervisors of an investment scam were arrested by the authorities after they fell into an entrapment operation in Anaffunan, Echague on August 30.


The entrapment operation against the suspects identified by the Police Regional Office 2 – Regional Public Information Office as a certain Ernesto Gumarang, 72, and Merlita Gumarang, 60, stemmed from the complaint of eight individuals.


These eight claimed to the police that they have fallen victim to the Interim National People's Initiative Council, an ‘investment’ entity being supervised by the two suspects.


According to the police report, the two representing the ‘unregistered entity’ are asking for a P400 membership fee from each of their victims, saying that their money will later earn P30,000 to P1,000,000 in December 2021.

With the complaint, the operatives conducted an entrapment against the two on Monday which resulted in their arrest after they were caught engaging in an investment scam and soliciting money from the people without any authority or company registration.


During their arrest, the police confiscated from their possession various certificates, forms, and documents; motorcycle, 2 cellphones, pens, stapler, stamp pad, handbag, and cash amounting to P3,500.

After inventory, they were brought to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Santiago City Field Unit for documentation. A case of Syndicated Estafa shall be filed against them.


Moreover, further investigation is being conducted for the identification of other possible victims.
