‘Shabu no. 1 drug choice in Cordillera NOT Marijuana’ – PDEA

Updated: Jun 22

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Drug personalities in the Cordillera region prefer shabu over marijuana, according to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Cordillera.

During the recently-held Buhay Ingatan, Droga'y Ayawan(BIDA) anniversary celebration in Kalinga, Assistant Regional Director Christy E. Silvan revealed that majority of the individuals arrested for drug violations were caught possessing or selling shabu.

“Despite CAR being the major source of marijuana, shabu remains the number one drug of choice in the AOR[Area of Responsibility],” she bared.

According to her, marijuana plantation sites are present in Tinglayan, Bakun and Kibungan in Benguet, and Sadanga, Mountain Province. These illegal weeds, however, are not the reasons behind the arrests of most pushers and users in the region, but rather shabu.

The PDEA attributed the preference for methamphetamine to its accessibility, adding that the contraband is likewise easier to conceal when travelling in and outside the region.

“It is also noted that there is much supply of shabu, thus it is cheaper or affordable,” she further reported.

As to the concern on marijuana, Silvan, in her talk, conveyed that the PDEA, PNP Cordillera, and other law enforcement units continuously implement their anti-drug efforts to curb the cultivation, transportation, and eradication of illegal weeds as shown in the destruction and confiscation of large volume of marijuana in the region.
