Soldier from Kalinga killed in gun battle with NPA in Apayao

Conner, Apayao – An yKalinga soldier died after an armed encounter in Barangay Katablangan, Conner, Thursday afternoon, June 30, 2022, according to the Philippine Army.

The soldier, whose identity is withheld until his family is informed, was killed in action during a 30-minute gun fight between the army and rebels.

5th Infantry Division reported that the fallen soldier with his team encountered around 14 rebels.

Major General Laurence Mina , on behalf of the 5th ID, condoles with the bereaved family.

"While the heroism by the said soldier brings pride and glory to the tradition of the gallantry of the people of Cordillera, it is unfortunate that a young soldier who would have been the hope of his family has offered the supreme sacrifice.

His family bereft a loved one and his fellow lost a hero who could have been an effective peacekeeper, protecting the yKalingas and the Cordillerans against the cruelty, abuse and terror of the CTGs,” he stated.

Mina added they are on hot pursuit operations against the CTGs to give justice to the fallen soldier.

"We will not waste the sacrifice of our fallen hero who bravely fought the members of the CTG who have been terrorizing the people. We will press on the fight against the remaining insurgents for the victims, orphans, and widows of CTG atrocities," he emphasized.
