Solo parents in Tinglayan oriented on benefits under Expanded Solo Parents’ Welfare Act

Tinglayan, Kalinga – To increase awareness of their privileges under Republic Act 11861 or the Expanded Solo Parents’ Welfare Act, 21 solo parents in Tinglayan underwent orientation on said law, particularly its implementing rules and regulations.

RA 11861, which amends RA 8972, or the Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2000, grants additional benefits to solo parents in the country.

Said law took into consideration those in the group with low income.

Under said legislation, solo parents are entitled to social protection services that include livelihood development and counseling, 7 days of parental leave annually, a scholarship for the parent and one child up to age 21, social safety assistance such as food, medicines, and financial aid during disasters, calamities, and pandemics, and a monthly cash subsidy.

Further, they shall also be prioritized for scholarships, livelihood training, poverty alleviation programs, and low-cost housing projects.

For those earning less than P250,000 annually, a 10% discount and an exemption from value-added tax on goods for children up to six years old, such as food, micronutrient supplements, sanitary diapers, medications, and vaccines, among other health needs.

Serving as resource speakers were MSWDO Angeline Ando, Solo Parent Focal Person SWO 1 Dhelia Guyang, and Municipal Administrator Ramon Dungoc.

The municipal administrator, representing Mayor Sacrament Gumilab, assured solo parents of the support of the local government unit during his privilege speech.

“The local government unit of Tinglayan hears the concern of its people, such as in the case of PWDs and senior citizens who voiced out their needs; henceforth, the creation of the Sayaaw San Chacha’or and Fachang programs,” he said.
