Son of Baguio cab driver becomes first blind person to pass PH Bar exam

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

Baguio City, Philippines – A son of a Baguio cab driver has become the first visually-impaired person to pass the Bar Examinations in the country.

University of Baguio alumnus Anthony Mark Dulawan Emocling’s name appeared at 1,407 in the list of 3,992 passers of the Bar Examinations held on November 9, 13, 16, and 20, 2022. At least 43.4% of the 9,183 total takers made it to the list.

Despite his visual impairment, Emocling gained academic recognition and likewise excelled in extracurricular activities during his stay at UB.

He finished his bachelor’s degree in political science as cum laude at the same university.

With the same determination and hard work, Emocling entered the school of law, also of UB.

He shared that his journey came with “a lot of challenges” but he was motivated to push through for him to have a stronger voice “to advocate for a better future for persons with disabilities.”

“I’m using regular computers na may screen reading software tapos yung screen reading software na yun, yun yung mga nagbabasa ng mga books ko to read for me. Parang I will just plug in the software nung reading material and I will listen to it, ganun na po ako magreview,” he said in an interview with a local media.

Emocling has this to say to aspiring lawyers: “isipin natin yung pagiging abogado is a sacrifice for the people na hindi porket naging abogado ka is mas magaling ka na sa ibang tao. Pag gusto mong maging abogado, dapat naka-ready ka na mag-sacrifice for your fellow citizen dito sa bansa natin.”

“Yung pagpasa lang ng bar is just a stage na kaya niyo ring gawin, nauna lang kami, susunod din kayo,” he added.
