Special Investigation Task Group formed to probe Cagayan police official slay

Cagayan, Philippines – A Special Investigation Task Group was formed to probe the death of a police official in Cagayan who was gunned down by a still unidentified assailant on the evening of November 7, 2022, in Abulug, Cagayan.


PMaj. Rafael Tangonan, 36, married, assigned at the Finance Service of the Police Regional Office 2(PRO2) died after his vehicle was riddled with bullets around 8:00 PM in front of a hardware and construction supply in Barangay Libertad.


Tangonan sustained multiple shots in his body, including his head. He was rushed to a hospital in Luna, Apayao but was declared dead on arrival.

The suspect who fired multiple bullets at the victim’s car was allegedly onboard a brown Innova.


While the police are looking for the suspect, PRO2 Director PBGen. Steve Ludan, who condemned the killing, ordered the creation of a special investigation task force to probe the incident.


According to the report of PRO2, Cagayan Police Provincial Director PCol. Julio Gorospe had already convened with the personnel of Abulug Police Station and the Provincial Investigation and Detective Management Unit to discuss the case and the investigation of the incident to identify the gunman and the motive behind the crime.


Meanwhile, PNP Chief General Rodolfo Azurin directed the authorities to conduct a thorough manhunt operation to arrest the perpetrator. He stressed that punishment is certain to those responsible for the incident.
