'Sports steer youth away from societal ills' - Senator Bong Go at 2024 Kalinga Provincial Meet

Rizal, Kalinga – Senator Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports, emphasized his commitment to promoting sports programs nationwide in his keynote message during the opening program of the 2024 Kalinga Provincial Meet held in Rizal, Kalinga.

The event, which brought together over 2,000 budding athletes, served as a platform for showcasing talent, fostering healthy competition, and nurturing future elite athletes.

In his address, Senator Go reiterated his long-standing advocacy for a healthy lifestyle and emphasized the positive impact of sports on the well-being and development of young Filipinos.

His motto, "Get into sports, stay away from drugs to keep healthy and fit," underscored the crucial role of sports in steering the youth away from societal ills, particularly drug abuse, and its significance in nation-building. As the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, Senator Go highlighted the interconnectedness of sports and health in promoting a productive citizenry.

In the said sporting event, Senator Go contributed to the initiative by providing basketball and volleyball balls, as well as shirts for participants from each municipality. His support for sports development in the country has been instrumental, notably through his sponsorship of Republic Act No. 11470, establishing the National Academy of Sports (NAS) in New Clark City, Capas, Tarlac.

The NAS, a landmark initiative for nurturing and developing athletic talent, offers a secondary education program with an integrated special curriculum on sports. Developed in collaboration with the Department of Education and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), this program provides a conducive learning environment for student-athletes.

He further champions the approval of Senate Bill No. 2514, the proposed Philippine National Games Act, designed to establish a thorough structure for a national sports program. This legislation seamlessly integrates the promotion of grassroots sports with the advancement of national sports development.

In continuing efforts to strengthen the nation's sports sector, Senator Go effectively advocated for an increased allocation of funds for the PSC. This additional budget aims to assist in the preparation, training, and participation of Filipino athletes in forthcoming sports events, as well as to execute efficient programs aimed at developing the talents of more young and aspiring athletes, especially those at the grassroots.
