Sta. Marcela, Apayao holds Youth Leadership Summit 2023, takes stand against rebel recruitment

Sta. Marcela, Apayao – The 17th Infantry Battalion, 5th Infantry Division, and Sta. Marcela LGU gathered the youth leaders of all barangays in the said town for a Municipal Youth Leadership Summit this year with the aim to protect young people against recruitment activities of the CPP-NPA.

The summit was done on June 03-04 focusing on “Youthnity for Peace” held at the famous destination in the municipality, Bacut Lake Tourism Complex and Nature Park.

Sta. Marcela was once a town with presence of rebels which became a reason for some to leave and find other safer places to live.

It is now a rapidly changing town with an increasing number of businesses and agri-production.

Mayor Evelyn Martinez welcomed the youth leadership summit saying it helps to make them focus on their studies and work hard to have a better future.

“Yung mga activities na ganito ay nakakatulong para maremind ang mga kabataan sa kanilang pangunahin tungkulin at responisibilidad… yan ang mag-aral ng mabuti at maging bahagi ng pag-unlad ng kanilang pamilya at komunidad,” said Martinez in an interview, adding that if the youth are the hope we ought to help prepare themselves for the challenges of the future.

During the summit, the youth leaders were lectured on leadership qualities, the importance of peace in development, deceptions, and atrocities of the CPP-NPA, and other topics related to the youth and their future.

The youth leaders responded with positivity and thanked the 17th Infantry Battalion, 5th Infantry Division with their Commanding Office LTC, INF Oliver Logan, and the LGU.

Martinez with her Sangguniang Bayan Officials, headed by Vice-Mayor Rolly Guiang, have made one of their priorities the education of their youth, knowing they shall be the next leaders of the town.

In some of their ordinances and resolutions, SB Sta. Marcela emphasized youth development and assistance through scholarship programs and sports.
