Sta. Marcela, Apayao readies for BALANGKOY Festival 2023

Sta. Marcela, Apayao – As part of its preparations for a grand festivity, Sta. Marcela LGU headed by Mayor Evelyn Martinez, its partner agencies, and Civil Society organizations convened this May 09, 2023, to finalize the set of activities for Balangkoy festival in June.


Apart from the festival, the said LGU will also be celebrating its 56th founding anniversary.


Balangkoy is an Ilocano term for cassava which the town is famous for. It is where you can find one of the best cassava cakes and other pastries made from the said crop, although Sta. Marcela likewise produces the much adored braso de Mercedes and carrot cake.

During the presentation and discussion, it was agreed that the main events shall be done at the notable Bacut Lake and Tacang SWIP – the major tourist destinations of the municipality.


“We want our visitors, our participants and tourists to enjoy and relax habang nagpaparticipate sa mga activities, so dapat doon natin gaganapin yung main events,” said Mayor Martinez.


The Mayor likewise told the members of various committees to work hand in hand together to give the best experience for this year’s celebration.


Some of the huge events that will be held include the Fluvial parade by the lake, Drum and lyre performance, Agro-trade fair, Libnos ti Sta. Marcela pageant, and street dancing.

To add to the excitement, it was decided to hold other activities like mural painting, indigenous games, kite flying, kayaking, and sports competitions like volleyball and basketball.


During the three-day festival, it was also revealed that the LGU will launch its forest library.


Martinez is inviting tourists to come and visit Sta. Marcela from June 15-17 and enjoy the Balangkoy Festival, see the main tourist attractions and have a taste of their local products.
