Sta. Marcela, Apayao residents, visitors enjoy Balangkoy Fest Indigenous Games

Updated: Jun 18, 2023

Sta. Marcela, Apayao – Someone has sure a great and memorable childhood when they experienced playing local and indigenous games with lots of fun and laughter.

Before social media and mobile games, there were outdoor activities like tug of war, ‘kadang-kadang’ or bamboo stilt racing, and flying kites among others which the young ones spent their free time doing. These sometimes resulted in getting in trouble with their parents as they refuse to nap, wanting to be outside playing with their friends.

Bringing this feeling back, the Local Government Unit of Santa Marcela led by Mayor Evelyn Martinez included indigenous games in the day two activities of the town’s 56th Founding Anniversary and 19th Balangkoy Festival.

Participating constituents representing their respective barangays enjoyed themselves and competed in kite flying, kite fighting, ‘kadang-kadang’, tug of war, and kayaking at the Bacut Lake and Tacang Small Water Impounding Project(SWIP) on June 17th.

Winners of the game got a P5,000 cash prize while second and third placers received P3,000 and P2000, respectively. The rest of the participants collected consolation prizes.

Other activities on the second day of Balangkoy festival include street dancing and drum and lyre competition. The events were participated by the elementary and high school students in the municipality who displayed their talents in dancing and in music.

The top three placers received plaques and cash prizes while certificates and consolation awards were given to the other participants.
