Stray dogs thwart new modus of smuggling marijuana

Tinglayan, Kalinga – Wandering dogs along the national road in Sitio Ngilin, Barangay Poblacion prevented the transport of around P2.1 million worth of suspected marijuana bricks this June 6.

Officer in Charge of the Tinglayan Police, PLt Luis Bulao, narrated that the dogs were seen by a concerned citizen as they desperately tried to tear apart two boxes left on the road. Out of curiosity, he went to examine the content and saw suspected marijuana mixed with dried fishes, the reason why the dogs were trying to pry open the packages.

With a strong suspicion that he found marijuana bricks, he immediately went to the police station to report the alleged contraband.

Responding officers found the boxes are already damaged and through the holes they spotted the illegal drugs.

The police conducted a stake out and waited for approximately 30 minutes to see if someone will pick up the boxes. However, no one came.

A total of 19 bricks of alleged marijuana were discovered from the boxes with a standard drug price of P2,178,000.

New modus

Bulao said this is a new modus of transporting marijuana, saying it is possibly an attempt to confuse and divert the attention of a drug sniffing dogs should there be a checkpoint. Possibly hoping that with the stench of fish the dogs won’t notice the illegal substance.

However, dog trainers assured that the Kalinga drug sniffing K-9s are trained to do more than smell and could determine any contraband amidst other stuff mixed with it.
