Tinglayan, Kalinga – Preparations for the 6th Bodong Festival are in full swing in Tinglayan with the entire Sumadel community gearing up for the municipality’s participation in the biggest and much-anticipated festival in Kalinga.

Tinglayan Tourism and Information Officer Larae Lactao relayed that the Sumadel community will be composing the participants from Tinglayan in the ‘Diddiga’ on February 12 and the Bodong Street Dance Competition on February 13. All of these activities will be held in Bulanao, Tabuk City.

Lactao explained that the Sumadel tribe was chosen to represent Tinglayan in the ‘Diddiga’ since they are the ones who are well-known and well-acquainted with using ‘saggaypu’, a bamboo flute, which will be showcased by the town in said event. Also, the same community was picked to prepare for street dancing since the Sumadel National High School has yet to join the competition.

“Whole community ng Sumadel, agsagsagana da for Kalinga Day,” Lactao said.

Showing its commitment to the participants, the Tinglayan Local Government Unit headed by Mayor Sacrament Gumilab shouldered their meals and transportation, the talent fees of the choreographer and bandmaster who are currently helping them polish their performances, and the expenses for the participants’ props and attires.

In a statement, Gumilab called iTinglayans to support the Sumadel tribe as they represent the entire town in the Bodong festival, showing not just the iKalingas but also visitors and tourists the rich heritage, culture, and the talents of the municipality.

“The DIDDIGA and the Street Dance Competition are not just performances; they are a testament to our unwavering commitment to preserving and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Tinglayan and Kalinga as a whole. Through your dances, chants, and rituals, you embody the spirit of our ancestors and the resilience of our people,” he said.

As for the Sumadel tribe, the mayor assured them of his full support saying, “your participation in the DIDDIGA highlights the authenticity of our traditions, ensuring that our cultural identity remains strong and honored. To the students of Sumadel National High School, your dedication and energy in the Street Dance Competition reflect the bright future of Kalinga’s heritage.”
