Sunrise After a Heartbreak: Teacher turns painful love journey into a book

Updated: Nov 14

All have gone through heart aches, but not all can transmute that painful and traumatic feelings into a book.

Princess Neliette Aquino, a college educator who hails from Kalinga province, wrote her journey of heartbreak, moving on, and a new beginning – responding to the question “may saya parin ba matapos siyang mawala?”

Princess successfully launched her first book which she considered as one of her breakthroughs in her life on Sunday, November 11, entitled “Sunrise after a heartbreak”. The book provides a detailed narrative of what and how she felt during the onset of her heartbreak with vivid descriptions and facts. It is a book that documents the stages of pain and moving on.

In an interview with the author, she emphasized the importance of self-care and improving oneself during a heartbreak. Holding on to GOD while hoping for better days to come is also paramount in leading people who suffered the same faith into acceptance.

“I want to write into paper what others cannot. I want people to know what people go through when they are broken. Not just to know but to let them understand what they go through. That it is not just about being broken in the aspect of love but in the many facets of life...It is about healing. The journey one goes through,” she stated.

Princess admitted that without her ex-boyfriend giving her the grief-stricken experience she could not have written the book.

During the launching of her book, her family, relatives, friends, colleagues, fellow authors from Kalinga, and her mentor in book writing – Jonas Dupo, came to give support.

Her Inspiration

Princess jokingly said that Taylor Swift was instrumental in influencing her to put her story into writing and publish the book. She said that being heartbroken led her to feel empty and depressed, but she managed to look into the bright side and write a literary piece instead. It’s just like Taylor Swift who was able to compose Grammy Award-winning songs due to heartbreaks – All to Well, Midnight Rain, to name a few.

She added that when visiting libraries and bookstores, only a few books tackle such issues as hers,  motivating her to document her journey. Princess hopes the book can be educational to those who are undergoing the same experience to take good care of themselves as they move forward.

“I wanted to promote and advocate mental health awareness through this book. That we need to take good care of our mental health in situations like being broken is not just the heart that will be broken but also the mind. We should remove the stigma of being quiet about the struggles we have. We should be more vocal. And being in Cordillera we tend to keep quiet because we are not that affectionate and very vocal in talking about things like this. So, we tend to shy away from sharing because we don’t usually talk about things like this inside the house,” she said.

Buy the book and help a mental health advocate group

As relayed by Princess, part of the proceeds in her book sales will be donated to the Philippine Mental Health Association - Cordillera Chapter Inc. The book amounts to P250.

As to choosing the organization, she said the mental health advocate group had been instrumental in her journey to healing, thus the plan of giving back and helping fellow Cordillerans deal with their mental health issues.
