Syngenta corn, top choice of 250 farmers from Kalinga, Mt. Province

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Syngenta corn variety was the top choice of 250 farmers who participated in the Cordillera Corn Derby Field Day held on barangay Cudal, Tabuk City, Kalinga on September 20-23, 2022.

Participants of the derby were from Tabuk City, Rizal, Pinukpuk and Tanudan, Kalinga as well as farmers from Paracelis, Mountain Province.

In the said event, 16 newly yellow corn seed varieties were introduced to the farmers for assessment and selection as best seeds for farmers to cultivate and produce.

The new varieties were introduced by the eight private companies, the Advanta Philippines Inc., Asian Hybrid Seed Technologies Inc., Bayer Crop Science Inc., Bioseed Research Philippines Inc., Cornworld Breeding Systems Corp., Corteva Agriscience Philippines Inc., Evo Gene Seeds Corporation, and Syngenta Philippines Inc. These companies are the partners of the department in said program.

Among the chosen corn seed varieties by the farmers, Syngenta Philippines variety NK6130BGT was the top choice and considered the champion in the corn seed varieties assessment done. Meantime, Bayer Crop Science variety DK8282S got the first place, Syngenta variety NK8840BGT was second place, and Corteva Agriscience variety P3585YHR was third place.

Provincial Agriculturist Engr. Domingo Bakilan encouraged the farmers to choose freely the corn seed varieties they want to cultivate and produce regardless of the results.

With the program, Jovita Dalayday, one of the participants, expressed her gratitude to the department as they learned new knowledge about farming technologies which they can apply in their farming activities to improve their crops and increase their income.
