Tabuk City, Kalinga — Various activities have been prepared for the Persons Deprived of Liberty at the Tabuk City District Jail in this year’s celebration of the National Correctional Consciousness Week from October 24 to 28, 2022 as a way to promote their well-being.

The National Correctional Consciousness Week was institutionalized through Proclamation No. 551, s. 1995 to raise awareness of the plight of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL).

In an interview with District Jail Warden, Chief Inspector John Wayland Lapon, he said the event is their way to make the inmates feel they still deserve to be treated as human beings.

“Iti kasla bottomline na daytoy gamin ket kasla respect of human rights nga uray nu adda da ditoy uneg, ket adda latta diay rights da as a person,” he said.

“Uray incarcerated diay tao, adda latta diay rights na as a person. Iti naawan lang kanyana ket diay liberty na ta adda garud offense nga inaramid da ken adda iti order iti korte nga ma-incarcerate da iti maysa nga institution like the jail,” he explained.

Weeklong Activities

This year’s observance of the weeklong activity at the Tabuk District Jail commenced with a motorcade in Dagupan and Bulanao and was followed by a mass inside the facility on October 24.

In the afternoon of the same date, a mini concert was rendered to the inmates by the Kalinga Police Provincial Office band. Lapon said that this activity was pursued to address boredom on the part of the PDLs.

On the second day of the program, October 25, a ‘Kapehan sa Piitan’ was conducted wherein members of the justice system were invited to answer the queries of the inmates. This activity was later followed by the graduation of 31 PDLs who finished the Hilot Wellness program of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

The next day, October 26, the PDLs had their medical and dental check-up.

On the fourth day of the celebration, the inmates continued with the championship games for basketball, volleyball, chess, and damath.

The last day will be the awarding of the winners of the different contested activities.
