Tabuk City, Kalinga – How many people had been hurt and killed in road accidents in Tabuk City in the past six months?

Vehicular Traffic Accidents(VTA) alarmed authorities in the country earlier this year after documenting nearly 50,000 cases from January 1 to April 11 with at least 1,499 deaths.

In May, the Department of Transportation launched Philippine Road Safety Action Plan which aims to reduce the number of vehicular traffic casualties in the Philippines by at least 35% by 2028.

But what does the number say in Tabuk City? Based on data obtained from the city’s police station, road crash incidents did not just increase, they doubled.

From January to June 2023, there were 103 incidents recorded. This is two times higher than the 49 cases for the same period last year.

While the death toll decreased from 8 in January – June 2022 to 6 this year, the number of injured individuals almost tripled from 19 to 50. Cases that resulted in damage to property likewise doubled with 47 incidents.

Motorcycles being the vehicle mostly used in the city topped the number of transportation involved in VTA this year.

Data showed there were 128 motorcycles involved followed by private vehicles with 33; tricycles, 15; trucks, 8; and Public Utility Vehicles and hand tractors with 2 cases each.

Authorities in Tabuk consider the now relaxed movement of people after the Covid-19 pandemic as one of the factors behind the increase in VTA cases in the city.
